Why Dragon Ball Z Budokai Tenkaichi 3 is the Best Dragon Ball Game of All Time!

Dragon Ball Z is as old as our parents at this point. The series is a cult classic, still relevant to this day with sequels and movies taking the internet by storm the moment they go on air. But what has played a huge role in making this critically acclaimed series a fan favorite is the video game side of the series. Ever since the famicom (NES) days, we’ve had a million games come out, featuring the one and only Goku himself.

Now we aren’t here to name all these titles because that’d take a whole month or so. But even taking all these games into consideration, it’s safe to say that one particular title stands out. This video game was just way too ahead of its time when it came out back in the 2000’s. I’m pretty sure we all have the same game popping up in our heads right now. Dragon Ball Z Budokai Tenkaichi 3 just does everything right, without a doubt. So today, let’s give ourselves a memory check, getting overdosed on that nostalgia drink and have a look at just what makes this game a total gem!

Delivering what’s advertised, nothing more, nothing less

Just remember a major fight like ‘Goku vs Vegeta’ or ‘Goku vs Frieza’ for starters. Now, just vision any video game making that happen. I know, all we can see is a broken controller and these pixels fighting each other out in a free for all 2D fiesta. But when it comes to Budokai Tenkaichi 3, things are different.

Want to do that iconic galick gun vs kamehameha? We’ve got the ‘shot exchange’! Want to fly all around that wasteland while yelling at the top of your lungs? Say no more. The game was as close to the anime as it got, making us redo the series however we deemed necessary. I still remember how big this was back in the day cause it just brought the good old ‘the sky is the limit’ into the equation! It was like pulling off those special moves straight from the anime all the while the PS2 hardware made sure we weren’t disappointed in the slightest!

Every character ever, so many to choose from!

One thing that people always had a problem with when it came to these dragon ball games was the number of characters. Every game just had a certain arc as the ‘endpoint’, whether it was frieza being the final boss or cell being the big villain at the very end. But Budokai Tenkaichi 3 did things differently. Actually, let’s just test things right here, shall we? Janemba? Check. Omega Shenron? Check. Super Android 13? Check. Turles?! Check!! From every arc, every movie, there isn’t a character that isn’t included in this game right here. Heck you can even play as Cui or some random side character if you want to lose that bad or something.

But the thing stands that the video game won’t disappoint you in the slightest. From every version of goku to every version of gohan, it’s just crazy how much attention the guys paid to the details, not skipping out a single thing. That still is something that’s unparalleled even today. Not a single dragon ball video game has a character roster like that. The roster just ends up being the biggest selling point of the video game in general. Heck you can even play as Dr. Slump! What’s even sweeter is how every move that the anime showed even once is included in the game! Yes, you heard it right! It’s just the whole anime packaged into this little disc, hundreds of episodes coming together as one, delivering the whole experience.

Getting confused? We’ll just break the screen, no problem

You see, Dragon Ball as a franchise has its own way of solving problems, dealing with difficult situations. If the moon is giving you trouble, you just destroy it without a second thought. Also, the other way around, if you need the moon to come out in broad daylight, you just create one for yourself! It’s just crazy how Akira treats these things as nothing almost the entire time. But that makes this dragon ball game stand out compared to the rest. Sure, a few dragon ball games pulled out the split screen feature earlier than this bad boy right here but Budokai Tenkaichi 3 was in fact the very one that did it right. Playing multiplayer has never been any more fun since this game brings both ‘sides’ to the screen!

It’s just like you’re making your own version of the anime at this point in addition to the graphics not letting you down one bit. Everything looks so crisp even today and the fast-paced gameplay only manages to add a lot more to the charm that this video game already has. All in all, Dragon Ball Z Budokai Tenkaichi 3 is an experience, something you must play at least for once. That is cause you’re for sure going to get addicted to this masterpiece of a video game that we have on our hands right now!

Easy to get into with a story mode that delivers everything about the series

A big thing that determines the success or failure of a video game is how easy/hard it is to get into. That’s why a lot of people tend to drop ‘FromSoftware’ games despite them being utter masterpieces. But Dragon Ball Z Budokai Tenkaichi 3 kept that in mind, making the mechanics, the fighting and the gameplay being as user friendly as it could’ve ever gotten. In an era where Tekken had a hundred or so commands for a particular character, a million combos, a trillion possibilities, Dragon Ball Z Budokai Tenkaichi 3 kept it simple yet not too simple.

Players putting the time and effort into mastering the game and playing it on the next level get rewarded all the while the newbies don’t have a hard time getting into it. Plus, every character moves around and does that crazy stuff the same way and that just ends up making it easy to pick anyone up and learn him/her from scratch.

Another big selling point of this video game is the story mode. We’ve got the whole anime, from dragon ball to Z to GT just coming together, bringing the best each character has to offer. I still remember how this game blew every other title away for what it brought to the table. It’s just a whole retelling of the anime but this time around, you’re the one who’s in control, the one who decides how your character fights and affects the progression of the game itself. All that just ends up making the video game such a nice experience that you can’t help but keep coming back to it over and over again without getting tired one bit.

The Verdict about Dragon Ball Z Budokai Tenkaichi 3

Looking back at it, Dragon Ball Z Budokai Tenkaichi 3 was a huge hit in those PS2 days. Heck it even made the likes of burst limit and ultimate tenkaichi look like they were ‘lacking’ or so. Plus, even if you compare the game to the ‘arcsystems masterpiece’ FighterZ, it’s a no brainer as to which game wins that battle, that by a long shot as well. Look, I’m not going to shoot down Dragon Ball FighterZ for no reason. The game has great mechanics, controls and captures the whole dragon ball feel really well. But at the same time, that 3D is where it’s at, where the anime really comes out and shines in the limelight. I’m pretty sure most of you would agree with me on that one.

Man! All that discussion about the game has made me want to take out my PS2 and start blasting my way through the story mode right now. You all do the same, okay?! Budokai Tenkaichi 3 needs to rise from the ashes and show the world what a real Dragon Ball video game exactly looks like.
